Лидер группы Билли Корган сформировал особое звучание, использовав элементы прогрессивного рока, хэви-метала, готического рока, психоделии и дрим-попа, в результате чего получился многослойный, мощный саунд, ведомый плавающим ревом гитарного дисторшена. Дополняет звучание мученическая лирика, повествующая о стандартных для альтернативной музыки проблемах отчуждённости, несчастливого детства, об одиночестве и разнообразных комплексах.
Своим успехом The Smashing Pumpkins помогли открыть для миллионов слушателей хэви-метал и оркестрированный прогрессивный рок, а также способствовали тому, что альтернативный рок приблизился к року 70-х - во всяком случае, в глазах радио-ведущих и мейнстрим-аудитории.
